Yup, you heard it, Kayaking!
We were so lucky to stay in my friends house that sits just above the Estuery in the little town of Newton Ferrers which is so quaint and beautiful and have the fortunate luxury to do a bit of kayaking in her families...kayaks. (nearly said boats )
Im not the most water versed person you will have meet and this showed quite early with my pathetic attempt to lift the Kayaks above my head and load them on to the trolley to take down to the water. Now, I have this habit, probably quite annoying habit which gets me laughing at the most inconvenient moments, disabling me from any activity at hand leaving my two friends pulling most of the weight. Great start Kate, good effort.
Once at the dock I slowly positioned myself into the Kayak and eased myself and the kayak into the waters. Fail number two soon raised, coordination. You see, you had to twist your oars as it made its way into the water, alternating each end. Add some speedy waves into the mix and I was soon gliding away and banging into other boats in the area. Which may I add was still pretty much in the dock.
I was struck with fear as my instructor (my friend) ordered me not to touch anything and insisted I used the oars to move. It is such a strange feeling not being able to stable yourself with your feet or arms.
A nice drift around the edge of the dock later we swapped around and on my second go I wasn't too bad and the sea was my friend again. Wahey another skill to my bow, I can now Kayak!
I love trying new things and this is one I definitely would not have come up with by myself. Despite the reluctancy it was rather damn fun and I will never forget the memory of floating around again, in hysterics. There is never a dull moment with these two and I am so pleased to add this to August in the 12 memorable moments of 2014.
